Watch the Action-Filled Trailer for Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado

The secretive Colombian hitman Alejandro Gillick, masterfully played by Benicio del Toro, is back once again to seek vengeance on the men who killed his family in the full-length trailer for Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado. The follow-up to director Denis Villeneuve’s highly acclaimed movie Sicario (starring Emily Blunt), Sicario 2 (subtitled “Day of the Soldado”), follows the story of an American drug-enforcement unit charged with the task of stopping the Mexican drug cartels.

In conversation with Collider, Jeffery Donovan (who plays Steve Forsing in the franchise) describes the movie as a “stand-alone spin-off” of the original film, rather than its sequel or prequel. This would make sense, as the first Sicario protagonist (Blunt) will not appear in this new film. Instead, Sicario 2 follows the narrative of del Toro’s Alejandro to tell another side of the story from a “male point of view.”

The film’s first teaser, released last December, gave Sicario fans a glimpse of the action-packed scenes in the movie. Now, the full trailer goes more in depth, revealing both the film’s plot and the hero’s major conflict.

Department of Justice officer Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) joins forces with Colombian hitman Alejandro once more, armed with the task to start a war between the drug cartels by kidnapping the teenage daughter of a Mexican kingpin, Carlos Reyes. Alejandro, as we saw in the first movie, seeks vengeance on the cartel family members that murdered his wife and daughter. But when Alejandro is faced with the order to terminate Reyes’ daughter, Isabela Reyes (whom he’s captured and is holding hostage), the killer faces a moral dilemma.

”[Alejandro] has the chance for an eye for an eye, but sees a young girl going through what his daughter went through,” said del Toro, speaking with USA Today. “He has to decide to follow orders or protect the girl. It’s just one thing about this screenplay that makes it interesting.”

Performing in her second live-action picture is 16-year-old Isabela Moner, who plays the part of Reyes’ determined daughter, Isabela. Her breakout role was in Transformers: The Last Knight.

Another new face to the Sicario franchise is Sicario 2 director Stefano Sollima, who filmed the movie in New Mexico and Mexico City. The production was overseen by the writer of both films, Oscar nominee Taylor Sheridan.
