Looks like that planned Jumanji reboot is finally ready to ruin more families, futures and entire townships.
Jake Kasdan, known for Bad Teacher, Freaks and Geeks, and The Grinder, will helm the story’s big screen continuation and put the game into someone else’s poor, unsuspecting hands.
Scott Rosenberg (Life on Mars, Zoo) and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) served as writers for the Sony remake. The duo’s script was based on a draft by the original movie’s writers, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
The reboot, which the studio announced plans to produce in August of last year, has received a luke-warm response from fans of the Robin Williams-starring original. Hitting theaters back in 1995, the film grossed more than $260 million globally. The story’s second installment and more modern take, space-adventure Zathura, didn’t wreak nearly as much havoc at the box office.
That might have been a decent indicator that the original film, based on Chris Van Allsburg’s Caldecott Medal-winning children’s fantasy novel, didn’t need a follow-up, much less a modern spin. Who knows, though. A new film could spark a whole new generation’s love for the most life-ruining board game ever. Hopefully, this film also contains a big game hunter who kills people for sport.
Matt Tolmach and Bill Teitler will produce the movie. Ted Field, Mike Weber and Van Allsburg will serve as executive producers with Sony eyeing a release date of Dec. 25, 2016.
