Witness the Weaponized Generic-ness of the Spies in Disguise Trailer

Do you ever finish watching a movie trailer, take a moment to sit back and ponder what you’ve just seen, and come to the conclusion that everything you watched was created in some manner by a random number generator?

That’s us, after watching the trailer for Blue Sky/20th Century Fox’s Spies in Disguise, which you can see below.

Isn’t that sort of typical of Blue Sky Studios, though? They’re not a company that has difficulty getting famous stars to lend their vocal talent for films, but the entire company’s production tends to stick to kiddie fair, whether it’s the long-running Ice Age series or more recent films such as Ferdinand. Only The Peanuts Movie felt like it was made for more adult audiences.

Spies in Disguise, on the other hand, looks like two darts landed on a dartboard, on punch cards that said “secret agent” and “mad science,” and the two concepts were fused into one. Will Smith plays a spy named Lance Sterling who looks exactly like Will Smith, while Tom Holland plays a gadget inventor named Walter who looks exactly like Tom Holland/Peter Parker. The trailer doesn’t really suggest a villain, but Ben Mendelsohn is listed among the voice cast, so he’s pretty much got to be the villain, right? Spies in Disguise seems to be striving for maximum cliche, so we’ll be shocked if they thought of any other use for Mendelsohn but a villainous one. Here’s your one-sentence synopsis:

When an unexpected event puts the world in peril, Lance Sterling, the world’s best super spy, must team up with gadget inventor Walter in order to save the day.

Goodie. With a voice cast that also includes Rashida Jones, Karen Gillan, DJ Khaled and Masi Oka, Spies in Disguise is scheduled to hit theaters on Sept. 13, 2019.
