Disney Dates Star Wars: Episode IX

Disney announced today that they’ve officially set 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX to release on May 24, 2019 … you know, for fun, before they inevitably delay it to December.

After this year’s The Last Jedi hits theaters on Dec. 15, the still-untitled Han Solo-starring Star Wars Story is set to release on May 25, 2018.

Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World, The Book of Henry, Safety Not Guaranteed) is still locked in to direct Episode IX, with a script written by Derek Connolly, based off of a story treatment by The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson. The film will conclude Star Wars’ trilogy of trilogies.

While no cast members have been confirmed at this point, it can be safely assumed we’ll at least see Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver and John Boyega reprise their starring roles alongside also-likely returnees like Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Gwendoline Christie and more. Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy also recently confirmed that Episode IX won’t see the recently passed Carrie Fisher in any form, be it via old, unused footage or digital recreation. If you haven’t already, you can watch the moving tribute to Fisher from Star Wars Celebration here.
