First Han Solo Star Wars Story Cast Photo Revealed as Film Begins Production

Disney has released the first cast photo for the forthcoming Han Solo Star Wars Story.

From left to right, we’ve got co-director Chris Miller, Woody Harrelson, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Joonas Suotamo (as Chewbacca), co-director Phil Lord and young Lando himself, Donald Glover.

This is the first time we’ve seen this group photographed together at all, let alone in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. Lucasfilm announced today that principal photography with the actors began only yesterday in London’s Pinewood Studios. Missing from the photo is the recently cast Thandie Newton.

“Watching such inspired people from all over the world, with such unique voices, come together for the sole purpose of making art, is nothing short of miraculous,” Lord and Miller said in a statement. “We can’t think of anything funny to say, because we just feel really moved, and really lucky.”

Early last month we reported on the then-rumored casting of Woody Harrelson as the mentor character to Ehrenreich’s Solo, which has since been made official. The True Detective actor has seemed to imply that he may be playing Garris Shrike, the smuggler’s mentor from the long-since-abandoned Star Wars Expanded Universe, but only time will tell if that nugget proves true (as Disney consistently remains tight-lipped on such things, especially so early on in production). Fleabag star Waller-Bridge is set to play an unknown CGI-heavy character, while there’s little to no reliable word on who Clarke or Newton will be playing.

Also, something very interesting to note is that Disney is still aiming for May of 2018 for the spin-off’s release. This would not only make Lord and Miller’s Star Wars the first in recent years to not be released in (or delayed to) December, but it would also mean that fans would only have a six-month wait between Episode VIII and the directing duo’s Star Wars Story. Only time will tell if the media giant stays committed to this summer release date.

Stay tuned to Paste for any major updates on the sci-fi franchise, as there’s truly no foreseeable end for the flow of Star Wars news. Again, the as-yet-unnamed Han Solo spin-off is targeted to hit theaters on May 25, 2018. Find more details here.
