If you’re a Starz subscriber and you plan to remain one throughout the month of August, you’re in the exact right place. The celestial pay-cabler is adding a smattering of worthwhile film and television titles next month, and we’ll be darned if we don’t have a list of those very titles to walk you through today. That’s enough ado—on to the main event.
Starz’s foremost film addition of the upcoming month is a blast from the past—or is it the future?—in the form of the beloved Back to the Future trilogy, arriving Aug. 1. The Robert Zemeckis-directed blockbusters star Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, a teenager caught up in various timeline-altering chain reactions that he has to travel back and forth across the space-time continuum to fix, with the help of the eccentric Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) and their trusty, time-traveling DeLorean. We can only hope none of that is new information to you—if it is, there’s no time like the present (well, the future—Aug. 1, specifically) to get familiar with the iconic franchise. That’s just the start of Starz’s incoming August movies, which also include Oscar-winning naval epic Master and Commander: The Far Side Of The World, Edgar Wright’s beloved action-comedy Hot Fuzz, found-footage horror landmark The Blair Witch Project, Ron Howard’s Russell Crowe-starring boxing drama Cinderella Man and Brian De Palma’s iconic 1983 take on Scarface, all of which (and more) arrive on Aug. 1. Following those films later in the month are Jon Stewart’s directorial debut Rosewater (Aug. 9), Hayden Christensen career highlight Shattered Glass (Aug. 9), Oscar-winning Billy Bob Thornton/Halle Berry romance Monster’s Ball (Aug. 11), 1999 superhero parody Mystery Men (Aug. 16), on-trend 2019 psychological-thriller Escape Room (Aug. 17), acclaimed Dragon Ball animated feature Dragon Ball Super: Broly (Aug. 23) and this year’s Gina Rodriguez-led actioner Miss Bala (Aug. 31), among others.
Shifting focus to the TV side of things, Starz is adding new episodes of a handful of original shows in August, with the Season Six premiere of long-running crime-drama Power at the forefront—it’s bringing up the rear chronologically, though, as it doesn’t debut until Aug. 25. Starring Omari Hardwick as drug kingpin-turned-nightclub owner James “Ghost” St. Patrick, Power is a tale of betrayal and revenge, the sixth installment of which finds Ghost aiming to settle a score, secure a lost loved one’s legacy and finally break free of the last trappings of his former life of crime. Prior to Power’s Season Six premiere in late August, Starz subscribers can look forward to new episodes of sci-fi spy thriller The Rook, currently in its debut season, and restaurant business coming-of-age drama Sweetbitter, currently in its second. New episodes of both series air Sundays, starting on Aug. 4 and airing weekly until Aug. 18, which brings the eighth and final episode of The Rook’s first season, and the seventh and eighth (and final) episodes of Sweetbitter’s sophomore run. Beyond those shows, all Starz is adding by way of August TV is black-and-white Western series Cheyenne (episodes 1-107, Aug. 1), which—actual fun fact—was the first-ever hourlong drama series to run for more than one season. You learned something today!
Starz giveth, but also taketh away: Rotating out of the app’s library in August are 2009 crime-comedy I Love You Phillip Morris (Aug. 2), iconic late-’80s ro-dance-tic drama Dirty Dancing (Aug. 31), 1998’s Eddie Murphy-led take on Dr. Dolittle (Aug. 31), Paul Verhoeven horror-thriller Hollow Man (Aug. 31), Oscar-winning coming-of-age drama Juno (Aug. 31) and George Miller’s original Mad Max (Aug. 31), among others, so consult the list below and make sure you don’t miss out on any of your personal must-sees.
