The Weeping Woman Haunts the First Teaser for The Curse of La Llorona

The first teaser for The Curse of La Llorona takes its time introducing its titular Weeping Woman, who in Mexican folklore haunts lost children after having drowned herself and her two children in the river.

The legend of La Llorona has only popped up here and there in American pop culture, including a song titled after her in Pixar’s Coco, and the new teaser isn’t afraid to hold off its big reveal, which might still be an unfamiliar one for American audiences. Now set in 1970s Los Angeles, the film’s new teaser builds tension as two new victims sense her presence while stranded in a car, and it’s not until two full minutes in that we finally see what’s haunting them.

Out next April, The Curse of La Llorona stars Linda Cardellini, Patricia Velasquez, Sean Patrick Thomas and Raymond Cruz, and was directed by Michael Chaves, making his feature directorial debut. Producer James Wan, who’s also directed the first two The Conjuring installments, was apparently so impressed by Chaves’ work on the forthcoming feature that he chose Chaves to helm The Conjuring 3, also coming next year in July.

By the looks of it, Chaves’ debut feature is an audacious one, making use of all the horror tricks that will keep both children and their parents up at night.

Warner Bros. will release The Curse of La Llorona on Apr. 4, 2019.
