The Teams Behind Avengers: Infinity War and IT Are Adapting Narrative Artbook The Electric State

Even with two gigantic Avengers movies to finish up, Anthony and Joe Russo have optioned another project. Per Deadline, their movie studio (quite obviously named Russo Brothers Studio) has won a bidding war for the rights of The Electric State, a visual novel by Simon Stålenhag. Andy Muschietti of the recent IT movie is in line to direct.

Also attached to the project is the screenwriting duo of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who collaborated with the Russos on the last two Captain America films (also writing the first one) and the two forthcoming Avengers films. Muschietti will also produce alongside his sister, IT producer Barbara Muschietti. The Russos said in a statement to Deadline, “The opportunity to partner with inspirational talents like Simon, Andy, Chris and Steve is exactly the reason we started our company. We can’t wait to help this team create something special.”

The Electric State was a project Kickstarted by Stålenhag—it is a narrative artbook that follows “a girl and her robot” traveling through an alternate retro sci-fi version of ‘90s Western America, “where the ruins of gigantic battle drones litter the countryside heaped together with the discarded trash of a high tech consumerist society in decline.” The artist also came out with two similar projects before, titled Tales from the Loop and Things from the Flood, which had similar visual depictions, but set in Sweden.
