Sony Announces Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Sequel With 2018 Release Date

Sony Pictures announced today that The Girl in the Spider’s Web, a sequel to David Fincher’s 2011 adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, will hit theaters on Oct. 5, 2018. Production will begin this September.

Don’t Breathe’s Fede Alvarez, pictured above, is set to direct the script written by Steven Knight, Alvarez and Jay Basu. The film will also feature a brand new cast, and Alvarez is said to be currently meeting with prospective talent for the film. Per Variety, Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson are in the running to star.

“I’m hugely excited and grateful for this opportunity,” Alvarez said in a statement. “Sony has become family to me and I can’t think of a more thrilling project to celebrate our relationship. Lisbeth Salander is the kind of character any director dreams of bringing to life. We’ve got a great script and now comes the most fun part—finding our Lisbeth.”

The Girl in the Spider’s Web, based on the David Lagercrantz novel of the same name, is the fourth book in the Millennium series begun by Stieg Larsson. Larsson wrote the first three novels before dying of a heart attack in 2004.

Fincher’s 2011 adaptation of the first book, which starred Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist and Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander, was met with relative critical praise.
