Watch the Upsetting New Trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Image via A24/YouTubeYorgos Lanthimos is a unique filmmaker—anyone who’s seen The Lobster will agree with that. After receiving critical acclaim with 2009’s incestuous Dogtooth, Lanthimos’ films have only grown more surreal and unnerving.
“Unnerving” is certainly a word you could use to describe the new trailer for The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Continuing Lanthimos’ penchant for distorting and satirizing the norms of society, the film follows a surgeon (Colin Farrell) whose family befriends an incredibly creepy young man played by Barry Keoghan who tells him his entire family is going to die. The cast is rounded out by Nicole Kidman, Raffey Cassidy and Alicia Silverstone.
The trailer is yet another showcase for Lanthimos’ cinematic talent—each shot is so artful, yet so upsetting. The tension increases almost unnoticeably until the end, when you’re breathing fast and wide-eyed. Perhaps the most telling shot is the one of both of Farrell’s surgeon’s children in wheelchairs, hinting that the family does indeed go through the serious medical difficulties predicted by Keoghan’s character.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer comes out Oct. 20. You can watch the previous trailer for it here, or read our review of The Lobster here.
