Dominic West Cast as Lara Croft’s Father in Tomb Raider

Dominic West (The Wire, The Affair), has been cast to play Lord Richard Croft, protagonist Lara Croft’s father, in 2018’s forthcoming Tomb Raider reboot.

He’ll be joining Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl), who is playing the titular explorer, and Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight, Vice Principals), who will be taking on the role of the film’s villain.

The movie is set to follow the plot of Crystal Dynamics’ 2013 reboot of the franchise, also simply titled Tomb Raider. The game told the story of a young, inexperienced Lara and her crew becoming shipwrecked on a mysterious island before fighting for their lives against the murderous cult who reside there.

Assuming the similarities don’t end there, West’s character will likely have died long before the story’s beginning and primarily be featured in flashback sequences. In the game and its sequel, much of Lara’s journey centers around her quest to complete her deceased father’s research and clear his disgraced, once-famous name. In fact, Lord Croft did not even physically appear in the rebooted series until a flashback in 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider.

The film, which is being helmed by The Wave director Roar Uthang, will be a co-production between MGM and Warner Bros. As of now, the movie’s release is set for March 16, 2018.
