Topher Grace Joins Chrissy Metz in Faith-Based Drama The Impossible

The Impossible has found its pastor: that kid from That ‘70s Show. Topher Grace has officially signed on to join This Is Us star Chrissy Metz in the forthcoming adaptation of Joyce Smith’s 2017 memoir, The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother’s Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection. The story follows Smith after her 14-year-old son falls into a frozen lake in Missouri and is pronounced dead for 60 minutes before later recovering. Grace’s pastor, Jason Noble (Grace), serves as their small town’s young, hip man of God—he helps guide Metz’s Smith through this horrifying ordeal, per Deadline.

Just this past weekend, the faith-based, low-budget drama I Can Only Imagine grossed a surprising $17 million at the box office its opening weekend. To no surprise, Fox 2000 hopes to walk a similar path with the faith-led The Impossible, which is currently in production. The film will be directed by veteran television director Roxann Dawson, known for directing episodes of House of Cards, Scandal, The Americans, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and many more.

Grace recently finished shooting Spike Lee’s Black Klansman—about an African-American police officer who successfully infiltrates the local Ku Klux Klan and becomes the head of the local chapter—in which he plays a nasty white supremacist. Talk about a drastic role change. Grace, known for a lot more than just his hilarious and breakthrough role in the long-running comedy series That ‘70s Show, recently starred in a slew of dramatic films, including Truth with Cate Blanchett, Interstellar with Jessica Chastain and most recently, Netflix’s War Machine with Brad Pitt. He can be seen in A24’s forthcoming modern noir thriller Under the Silver Lake with Andrew Garfield.
