Watch the Trailer for Tyrel, Starring Jason Mitchell
Also starring: Michael Cera, Caleb Landry Jones and Christopher Abbott
Image via Magnolia PicturesThe trailer for Sebastian Silva’s Tyrel is out now, and it looks to be a doozy. The film, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year, focuses on a “boy’s weekend” in the Catskills, and the racial and social tensions that spring from an environment like that.
Jason Mitchell stars as Tyler, the only black guy in a group of white guys he doesn’t know very well, a group of white guys whose main goal seems to be getting absolutely, ridiculously shit-faced for an entire weekend. Co-starring as some of those white guys are Michael Cera, Caleb Landry Jones and Christopher Abbott.
The trailer drops hints at the sort of passive/benevolent racism that Get Out captured so well. One of the guys calls Tyler by the name “Tyrel,” hence the film’s title, and during a game, someone nominates Tyler to act out the “black accent.” Alcohol gets involved, things get violent. It looks to be an uncomfortably close view of, well, a lot of things: cultural and racial biases, toxic masculinity, and the ways that small acts of violence can escalate.
