20 years after Trainspotting hit cinemas, its sequel begins production today. Tristar and Sony released a teaser trailer this morning confirming the return of the original cast, which most notably includes Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Miller and Ewen Bremner.
The sequel is highly anticipated, as rumors of a Trainspotting sequel have been circling for a few years now, and homemade YouTube videos of shooting locales are already popping up. Both John Hodge and Danny Boyle returned to write and direct the film, respectively.
“It’s been 20 years since we met these characters, and John Hodge’s screenplay brilliantly explores what’s happened to them—and to us—in the intervening years,” said Boyle earlier this year. Having directed films like Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours since Trainspotting, Boyle has become a trademark comedy-among-the-tragedy director.
The Trainspotting 2 trailer takes us back to 1996, composed completely of footage from the original dark comedy. It also reveals that the film will be released on Jan. 27, 2017. Watch the teaser above.
