Watch Taraji P. Henson Crack the Bro Code in What Men Want Trailer

Remember when Mel Gibson was leading man material? Somewhere in the depths of your ancient memory, think back to What Women Want, Nancy Meyer’s 2000 romantic-comedy in which Gibson acquires the ability to read women’s minds and unlocks insight into the less-than-satisfactory experience of many women in the business world and the carefully-guarded secrets of the female orgasm, all in less than two hours. What a guy!

Now, a mere two decades later, the movie is getting reworked and rebooted. In the gender-flipped What Men Want, Taraji P. Henson takes on Gibson’s role as Ali Davis, a sports agent fighting an uphill battle for recognition in her male-dominated field.

According to the movie’s official summary, Ali is passed over for a well-deserved promotion when she decides to use her newly-obtained ability to read men’s minds “to outsmart her colleagues as she races to sign the next basketball superstar, but the lengths she has to go to will put her relationship with her best friends and a potential new love interest to the test.”

Henson will star opposite Aldis Hodge, Richard Roundtree (Shaft himself!), Wendi McLendon-Covey, Tracy Morgan, Josh Brener, Tamala Jones, Phoebe Robinson, Max Greenfield, Jason Jones, Brian Bosworth, Chris Witaske and Erykah Badu, as Deadline reports. Badu’s role is particularly interesting, as she plays a psychic or mystic of some kind whose meddling imbues Henson with her mind-reading gift.

What Men Want will be directed by Hairspray’s Adam Shankman and produced by Girls Trip duo Will Packer and James Lopez. The movie hits theaters Jan. 11, 2019; check out the trailer below.
