Andrew Bird and Jim James Are “Sic of Elephants” for Today’s “30 Days, 30 Songs” Entry

Jim James gets his second showing in “30 Days, 30 Songs,” the anti-Donald Trump protest song project, with his appearance in today’s entry.

James joins Andrew Bird on “Sic of Elephants,” which also serves as the latest entry in Bird’s own series “Live from the Great Room,” which has recently seen him duet with Fiona Apple and Matt Berninger, among others. Bird’s song is a questioning plea to those comfortable enough to vote for the elephants, a not-so-subtle reference to the GOP. Bird said in his statement:

I wrote ‘Sic of Elephants’ on election night in 2004 when Bush was reelected. I went to sleep in the blinking red state of Ohio and when I woke up it was solid red. The song’s about people’s capacity to convince themselves that something so wrong is right. The harder they have to try, the more fervent they become.

I changed a few things to update the song for this election because what we’re facing in the Trump movement is full on fascism and he would be more destructive than GWB if you can imagine.

“Sic of Elephants”

You were right
Now we got good reason to worry
Your money made your eyesight all blurry
Now we’re making this a pacifist recalcitrant poses
Can’t you see how dangerous the one you chose is

Can’t you see how dangerous?
You’re too content to make a fuss
Can’t you see how dangerous
You’re too dangerous

And it brings us back to might makes right

So we learn from wars of the roses
The pain is only fear kneading your toeses
So you’re making haste despite your face to cut off your noses
You convince yourself and others these fists smell like roses

Can’t you see how dangerous?
When you’re too content to make a fuss
Can’t you see how dangerous?
Do you see how dangerous?

Squint your eyes and see how the phans sycophants elephants
Squint your eyes and see how the phans sycophants elephants
Squint your eyes and see red-faced rants pleated pants and sycophants
Squint your eyes and see
Squint your eyes and see

Oh, can’t you see how dangerous?
And it might come down to fight or flight

Can’t you see how dangerous?
You’re too content to make the fuss
Can’t you see how dangerous?
Can’t you see how dangerous?

Squint your eyes and see how the phans sycophants elephants
Squint your eyes and see how the phans sycophants elephants
Squint your eyes and see red-faced rants pleated pants
Sycophants elephants
Squint your eyes and see
Squint your eyes and see
Can’t you see how dangerous?
And it brings us back might makes right
