Adult Mom, the music project of non-binary musician Stevie Knipe, has released the new single “Berlin” and announced an upcoming tour with fellow indie-rock act Palehound.
This is the first single that Knipe has released as Adult Mom since the debacle involving their previous label, Tiny Engines, that unfolded in November. Knipe complained that the label had unfairly retained full ownership of Adult Mom’s masters, which made Knipe feel controlled and manipulated by the label. They were eventually granted full ownership of their masters, with a promise to have thousands of dollars worth of royalties from their albums finally paid up.
It appears that Adult Mom may now be affiliated with Lauren Records, which put out the “Berlin” single and re-issued Adult Mom’s debut LP Sometimes Bad Happens.
“Berlin” is a classic comeback for Adult Mom, with meditative lyrics backed by acoustic guitar, tambourine and keyboard. It grapples with loss and grief, examining the fleeting joy of a relationship that comes to a painful end.
“‘Berlin’ is a song that took over a year to write,” says Knipe in a statement. “It’s about processing the loss of an important friendship without knowing the exact cause of the loss. Through loss, there are moments recalled, like meeting for the first time, the moment you got close with that person, singing “hole” in dorm rooms, drinking beer in a bathroom, and of course, the complete paralyzation that comes with loss. It’s about being in between healed and not, and trying my best to calculate the reasons why she left.”
