Today, Alex G, one of indie music’s most-beloved voices for more than a decade, has announced the upcoming release of his 10th studio album (and major label debut), Headlights Releasing on July 18 via RCA Records, this is his first album under a major label and a long-awaited follow-up to 2022’s God Save the Animals, which we named the #2 album of that year. Eric Bennett wrote, “While moments on Animals nod at Elliott Smith’s yearning indie rock and others bring to mind Aphex Twin’s uncomfortable, twisted soundscapes, it never skews too far in any one direction. What is new this time around is an explicit appreciation for the substance of, and creative process behind, pop music.”
Continuing on his legacy of poignant rock releases, Headlights is slated to be an equally affecting collection of surreal indie rock songs. In anticipation of the album, Alex G has also unveiled a wistful new single called “Afterlife.” Framed by playful layers of mandolin, punchy snare, and ethereal harmonies, the lively alt-Americana song is an ode to the life that comes after we realize we only have one. The track comes with a music video to pair directed by Charlotte Rutherford. In it, a young boy in cowboy boots is dragged through the vibrant spaces of a rural community by the cord of a microphone.
