Alex Lahey Shares New Single, “Am I Doing It Right?”

Melbourne-based singer/songwriter Alex Lahey has shared the second single from her forthcoming album, The Best of Luck Club. Humble nods to cheap hotel rooms and the nomadic nature of touring (draped sardonically across Lahey’s signature upbeat pop-punk melodies) make “Am I Doing It Right?” an instantly identifiable concession for anyone pursuing music.

“One of the strangest parts about being a musician is that there is absolutely no set pathway you’re supposed to follow to get where you want to go,” Lahey explains. “This song reflects on being thrust into a lifestyle and going with it while feeling like others are looking over your shoulder to make sure you’re doing all the right things by you and everyone else. It’s like fighting a losing battle while loving every minute of it.”

An imposter syndrome confessional of sorts, “Am I Doing It Right?” cleverly paints an image of staying afloat in the rapidly changing music industry. Yet for all its candid, shoulder-shrug lines of nonchalant exasperation (“Everything was so out of reach / Like a ball on your neighbor’s roof”), the song’s chorus settles on the rewarding motivation driving it all: If you’ve managed to make even a few people dance along, you’ve got to be doing something right—right?
