American Ambulance – Stray

All singers have a thematic area in which they sound most credible. American Ambulance frontman Pete Cenedella’s hybrid voice—one part Graham Nash/Tommy James sweetness, one part Jagger sneer—is all vague attitude on the road ballad “When I Get Home” and the sweet consolation of “Marianne Is Hangin’ On.” But get him singing about liquor, on the traditional “Raleigh & Spencer,” and you know exactly what he wants. Whatever the state of his wheels, his lover or his liver, Cenedella can pen a fine lyric. Producer Hugh Pool helps the Brooklyn band achieve an unusual blend of acoustic and electric sounds and adds some unexpected touches, including charmingly retro organ. Throw in some reckless harmonies and the result is a great bar band. Pour these guys a strong one and toast the continuing evolution of alt.country.
