Andy Suzuki & the Method—aka singer Andy Suzuki and percussionist Kozza Olatunji-Babumba (grandson of Grammy-winning Nigerian drummer Babatunde Olatunji)—first joined forces in 2005 as students at Brown University. The duo released a debut EP, 300 Pianos, in 2009, and two years later they were selected as the Manhattan winners for WNYC’s annual Battle of the Boroughs—a competition among the city’s countless street performers. Two more recordings followed, but now with their third full-length album, The Glass Hour, a creative friendship has flowered into a formidable musical force. The pair’s sinuous songwriting, which curves into eddies and unexpected shapes at every measure, is steadied by Suzuki’s dulcet vocals. The Glass Hour keeps all those curves and fleecy vocals of the duo previous work, but stretches well outside the limits of the folk-pop label they’ve embraced to this point. Nowadays, Suzuki and Olatunji-Babumba are creating “future pop with an R&B vibe” that sounds at once like it’s beaming in from the future and reaching back to a classic American sound.
