Angel Olsen Shares Previously Unreleased “Sans”

Angel Olsen’s Phases is out this Friday, Nov. 10, and the renowned indie songstress has shared another previously unreleased song from her soon-to-be-released rarities collection.

Olsen debuted the stripped-down “Sans” on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, where she stopped by to perform a selection of songs during her West Coast run of shows supporting Arcade Fire. She has released both the official audio and her KCRW rendition of “Sans,” with the entire performance set to air on Nov. 13.

Olsen said of “Sans” in a statement:

“Sans” was a song I wrote in between Burn Your Fire and My Woman, something short and simple—but about a big thing in my life: travel and what it can do to the psyche. When you’re out there and you’re working and moving so fast it’s difficult to really imagine a time when you were fully realized and known. You know, it’s hard enough to be known when you’re around! But then there are those people in your life that know you and don’t need you around all the time to be or feel close—I suppose it’s about that too.

Previous advance tracks from Phases include “Special” and “Fly on Your Wall”—the former was recorded during Olsen’s My Woman sessions, while the latter was originally released as part of fundraising compilation Our First 100 Days. Olsen recently shared her self-directed and -edited video for “Special,” which she said played a key role in shaping her stellar sophomore record.

Listen to “Sans” and watch Olsen perform the song on KCRW below. Phases is available for preorder here.
