Toronto-based singer-songwriter Bahamas—aka. Afie Jurvanen—is back with his anxiously awaited fourth full-length album, Earthtones, and Paste is thrilled to have him and his band in the studio to mark the release.

Earthtones, the follow-up to the literally titled Bahamas Is Afie, includes the rising singles “Way With Words” and “No Wrong” as well as the recently released “Bad Boys Need Love Too.” Watch a video for “Way With Words” and find tour dates here.

Recorded in Los Angeles with the ultimate rhythm section—Pino Palladino (Adele, Ed Sheeran, The Who) on bass and James Gadson (Bill Withers, Herb Alpert, D’Angelo) on drums, the album represents another creative breakthrough for Bahamas, whose sound is deeper and more dynamic than ever.

With its shooby-dooby soul harmonies and easy flow, the record sounds like an oasis Jurvanen had spent years seeking. “Not knowing exactly what type of album to make, I was feeling pretty low,” he says. “But at that very moment, my longtime manager and confidante Robbie Lackritz called and said, ‘Dude, you should make an album with D’Angelo’s rhythm section.’ And just like that, the juices were flowing and the songs started coming.” No rehearsals, no charts, no rules. We worked fast and came away with 10 songs that sounded fresh and strange and warm and free of any genre.”
