Beck announces first new album in seven years

This morning, Beck announced Ride Lonesome, his first new album since 2019’s GRAMMY-winning Hyperspace, due out on September 18th through Capitol Records. Today’s announcement also comes with a new single, the atmospheric, moody “In The Night” that features an intimate guitar loop and Beck’s haunted, crepuscular lyrics. The track eschews typical structure in favor of an ever-repeating refrain over a building and waning orchestral arrangement. In the accompanying video, an appropriately contrite Denis Lavant smokes, ponders, and yearns.

Beck put Ride Lonesome together with a group of familiar faces: Smokey Hormel, Joey Waronker, Roger Joseph Manning Kr., Jason Falkner, and Justin Meldal-Johnson, all of whom previously worked with him on Sea Change, Morning Phase, and Mutations. Nigel Godrich, who also worked on Sea Change and Mutations, mixed the new album. The group suggests a softer, more meditative sound will appear on Beck’s new project, a continuation of the musical tradition he avoided in the last decade for the eclectic pop of Colors and the light synths of Hyperspace

“It had been a decade since we went in the studio and recorded Morning Phase. This time it felt like the playing and the chemistry had evolved and deepened—a sound that’s come together over the decades of working together,” Beck said in a press statement. “While we were revisiting a musical and physical place, it also felt like we were finding new sounds and emotional textures along the way.”
