Reminder: Palehound, The Ophelias and Grumpy to Play Immigrant Defense Project Benefit Show

Some of Brooklyn’s finest indie bands are teaming up to perform for a good cause. Held on Tuesday, May 27 at Baby’s All Right, Palehound, The Ophelias and Grumpy are playing a benefit show for the Immigrant Defense Project. Renowned DJ duo We Take Manhattan is also slated to perform. In addition to musical performances, Mezcal Rosaluna is sponsoring the show and creating a special cocktail menu for the night.

All proceeds from tickets go to the nonprofit organization, which advocates for fundamental rights for immigrants accused or convicted of crimes by working to reduce the severe and often unjust consequences within the criminal justice system.

This event was organized by Paste contributing photographer Emilio Herce, who holds this cause close to his heart. “I’ve been horrified by the actions of the current administration against immigrants, both documented and undocumented,” he shares. “This is a cause that’s personal to me, as a child of immigrants, and the images of families being torn apart and people being abducted in the street have been especially harrowing to me, as I’m sure they are to anyone paying attention. In order not to fall into despair, I decided to organize a benefit show for the Immigrant Defense Project.” He notes that the IDP “has been fighting for the rights immigrants under threat of detention and deportation for over 25 years,” and cannot think “of an organization more worthy of our support.”

“I’m so thankful to Palehound, The Ophelias, Grumpy, and the teams at Baby’s All Right and Rosaluna for jumping at the opportunity to perform and support the work of the Immigrant Defense Project,” adds Herce.

El Kemper of Palehound shares, “I am extremely disturbed by and worried about the rapidly escalating dehumanization of immigrants in our country. Up against the machine of American fascism, it can be easy to feel powerless. Bringing people together to celebrate and protect the oppressed, even in the smallest of groups, is an important and accessible vehicle of resistance. Missions like the Immigrant Defense Fund are vital in this fight and we should be doing everything in our power to strengthen them.”

Spencer Peppet of The Ophelias adds, “In a time where immigrants are being targeted and disappeared by ICE, illegally deported en masse, and refused basic human rights and dignity, it’s more important than ever to be vocal in our support for immigrants and those affected by these draconian laws. It will not stop until we make it.”
