Watch Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst Cover Death Cab for Cutie’s “Title and Registration”

Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst are in the early days of taking their Better Oblivion Community Center collaboration on the road for the first time, and during a sold-out St. Patrick’s Day show at The Showbox in Seattle this past weekend, the decidedly dynamic duo paid tribute to hometown heroes Death Cab for Cutie, covering the Bellingham, Wash., band’s Transatlanticism track “Title and Registration.”

Bridgers and Oberst perform a hushed, near-reverent rendition of the song to a spellbound crowd, amplifying the tender heartbreak of “Title and Registration” manyfold. Death Cab themselves would appear to approve, as they shared the cover via Twitter on Monday afternoon. (Bridgers, bowled over by their stamp of approval, tweeted in response, “getting hit by lighting [sic] any day now.”)

Bridgers and Oberst surprise-released their self-titled collaborative album in January—we named it one of the very best records released that month, with Paste’s Lizzie Manno praising the album as “an unsurprisingly tender, affecting excursion” in her review. Oberst told Paste that he and Bridgers had opted to “have our voices together as much as possible” on the album, just as they did on their “Title and Registration” cover.

Better Oblivion’s tour continues tonight at Salt Lake City’s Metro Bar. Attendees may very well catch another cover—the duo recently put their own spin on The Replacements’ “Can’t Hardly Wait” at an Arizona show.

Watch the duo perform their Death Cab cover below, and revisit Bridgers’ 2017 Paste Studio session further down. Better Oblivion also recently graced the Late Late Show stage—check that out right here.
