Björk Unleashes New Song and Video, “Blissing Me”

There has been a lot of anticipation for Björk’s new album Utopia (out next week via One Little Indian Records), heightened by the Gucci dress that took almost 900 hours total to create, and the video for “The Gate” she shared with us a month ago, which was a continuation of 2015’s Vulnicura.

Now the high priestess of art pop has shared a new track all about anticipation: It’s called “Blissing Me,” and it’s accompanied by a single-shot video of Bjork dancing. Directed by Emma Dalzell and Tom Walker, the video also captures what substance hides in the lines’ virtual connection—a shared and powerful feeling, experienced alone. The lyrics seem to halt with Björk’s breathless coos, the melody lengthening and building in intensity as “two music nerds” fall in love by exchange of MP3s, “falling in love to a song” (Björk actually holds out her hands several times to imitate texting). We are at once transported back to high school and also to an apex of pure emotion.

In Björk’s anticipation of sexual interaction, there is lust sprinkled with fairy dust. She is (always) in her own realm—this time it’s one where she can shed the most intimate layers of herself and slowly disappear into a kind of white mist bliss, or at least into a backdrop of sugar-coated perfection. The feeling of falling in love, after all, is a greater escape than the landing.

At the end of the video, Björk declares intentions to “reserve [her] own intimacies”—in other words, she’s falling in love with herself. It is a welcome affirmation in light of her recently revealed experience with an unnamed Danish director who sexually harassed her.

For the glory of a fully costumed, blissfully dancing Björk, watch the full video for “Blissing Me” in the player below (via Amazon Music U.K.), and check out one writer’s account of meeting her at the Reykjavik International Film Festival in Iceland last month.
