Black Belt Eagle Scout Shares New Single and Video “My Heart Dreams”
Photo by Sarah CassBlack Belt Eagle Scout, the musical project of multi-instrumentalist Katherine Paul, shared a new single, “My Heart Dreams,” along with its music video on Wednesday.
The track will appear on Paul’s forthcoming album . At the Party With My Brown Friends, which will be released on Aug. 30 via Saddle Creek.
“My Heart Dreams” follows Paul’s sophomore album’s lead single, “At The Party,” released last month.
The new track features Paul’s signature delicate vocals, fervent guitar playing and romantic, poignant lyricism. “Wasting this life, I only want me and you,” Paul sings before repeating the title phrase, “my heart dreams.”
According to a press release, “My Heart Dreams” was “written in Ohlone land during a transitional part of Paul’s life” and “expresses a consuming desire to find new love in the midst of heartbreak.”
The accompanying music video was filmed by Angel Two Bulls, who co-directed alongside Paul. It depicts Paul walking through the Portland Pride parade while wearing a pink wig. The video then transitions to scenes of Paul’s live performance in front of a playground.
Regarding the lively and meaningful music video, Paul said in a statement:
The idea behind this video was to do something fun while showing the resilience of the Indigenous people, particularly women and girls, which is why I chose to have the Black Belt Eagle Scout band be portrayed by young Indigenous girls.
In an age where Missing and Murdered Indigenous women (MMIW) are finally getting the attention they deserve, it’s important to make their strength visible. The justice around MMIW is something we should all be paying closer attention to and I hope my platform serves to heighten awareness. The girls and extras in the video are members of the Portland Two Spirit Society, a special group of LGBTQ Indigenous and Native American/Alaska Natives and the Portland All Nations Canoe Family.
Black Belt Eagle Scout has also announced new headlining tour dates along with the shows she is set to play with Devendra Banhart.
Tickets for the newly announced headlining dates will go on sale Friday, July 26, at 10 a.m. local time. Pre-sale tickets will be available on Thursday, July 25, at 10 a.m. local time on Black Belt Eagle Scout’s website, using the code “attheparty.”
One dollar from every ticket sold through the pre-sale will be donated to the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center, which, according to the organization’s website, “supports culturally grounded, grassroots advocacy” and “provides leadership to ending gender-based violence in Indigenous communities.”
