Photo by Daniel TopeteThis morning, Blondshell has announced her second album, If You Asked For A Picture, set for release May 2 via Partisan Records, arriving two years after her self-titled debut. In coordination with the highly anticipated announcement, she has released “T&A,” the album’s devastatingly powerful lead single.
The new album, produced by her frequent collaborator Yves Rothman (Yves Tumor, Amaarae) and named after the 1986 poem “Dogfish” by writer Mary Oliver, sees Teitelbaum traversing new sonic paths, trying her hand at more intimate ballads and complex songwriting while expanding upon the raunchy guitar rhythms and “boots on the tarmac” rawness that galvanized her debut two years ago. Blondshell explained in a press release, “The first record feels really black-and-white to me. This record has more questions.”
Meanwhile,“T&A” feels like an elevated version of the Blondshell we know. Opening with a bittersweet guitar melody and a retrospective, vulnerable first verse about the pains of accidental love with a close friend (“I liked having someone to call, but I started taking my shirt off and facing the wall”), the song then quickly explodes into its cathartic chorus: “Letting him in, why don’t the good ones love me?” “There’s a Rolling Stones song on Tattoo You called ‘Little T&A’ and at one point in the song, he says ‘tits and ass,’ so I’m borrowing that. I think in music, it’s easy to see things as either more sexualized or more romantic, and I wanted this to be both,” Blondshell said.
Two years ago, we named Blondshell the Best of What’s Next, with editor Matt Mitchell calling her first record a “triumphant debut from the next indie superstar.” At the end of 2023, we ranked Blondshell as the seventh-best debut record of that year, lauding its nothing-held-back, funny and painfully honest relatability.
