Bon Iver posted a link to a mysterious trailer on Tuesday morning via their social media accounts.
The video trailer, titled, “Sincerity is Forever in Season,” opens with the first few guitar strums of “Skinny Love,” the 2008 track that shot the Justin Vernon project to indie stardom. It then transitions to “Holocene,” the beloved 2011 song from Bon Iver’s self-titled second album, followed by the 2016 track “(8) Circle,” and lastly, a snippet of “Hey, Ma,” a single Bon Iver released last month.
In a series of short clips, we see a wolf running through a wintry backdrop, butterflies flying, flowers blooming as snow melts, a summer sunset and, lastly, a forest with falling autumn leaves.
“Bon Iver, born of winter, bloomed in spring, stutter-shimmered into summer, and now, it might be autumn, it might be,” a narrator says as the images and songs transition. “Sincerity is forever in season. In the dark, you gotta sing like you see the sun. Sing the song for those who sing along. You, me, we.”
As many Bon Iver fans already know, Vernon’s music is inspired by nature, the changing of the seasons and deep introspection.
Bon Iver’s debut, For Emma, Forever Ago, has been described as a “winter album,” with their 2011 self-titled said to reflect “spring,” and their most recent effort, 22, A Million, to represent the summer season.
