This past weekend, Brittany Howard performed a brilliant set at Webster Hall in New York City. Earlier this month, Howard unveiled her new solo album, What Now, which earned a Paste Pick designation. “What Now addresses big themes—love, life and destruction—and, in places, it delivers a massive, eclectic sound,” critic Cat Woods wrote. “But, for the most part, there’s a subtleness and joyful, rhythmic gentleness to Howard’s songs that suggest she’s dialed it all the way up to a 10 at some point and then siphoned off all the excess to let her own voice take center stage.”

On top of that, we named her our first cover star of February, in which our writer Grant Sharples thoroughly tracked Howard’s solo career from Jaime until now. “Both Jaime and What Now are portraits of Brittany Howard at that present moment; her music is a method of capturing her headspace at a specific point in time, and you can look at the trajectory and see the patterns and continuity for yourself,” Sharples wrote.
