Cardi B Releases Scornful New “Be Careful” Video

Hell hath no fury like a Cardi scorned.

Cardi B has released a new music video for her single “Be Careful,” from her debut album Invasion of Privacy, which dropped on April 5.

The Bronx-born rapper exploded onto the hip-hop scene last year when her debut single “Bodak Yellow” reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; the only other female rapper to do so was Lauryn Hill in 1998 with “Doo Wop (That Thing).” Following the release of her second single “Bartier Cardi” and subsequent album Invasion of Privacy (which entered the charts at #1 in the U.S.), Cardi B became the first-ever female artist to chart 13 songs simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100.

The new music video (dir. Jora Frantzis) features a softer side of the rapper. Though Cardi is typically known for her borderline-aggressive confidence—”I say my own name during sex,” she spits on the track “I Do” with SZA, in a direct case-in-point—she discusses infidelity and vulnerability on ”Be Careful.” “Be careful with me, do you know what you doin’? / Whose feelings that you hurtin’ and bruisin’?” Cardi almost sings.

In the Western-themed music video, which shares quite a bit of DNA with Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill films, Cardi marries a man before ultimately burying him in the desert. Staring down into his coffin, she almost looks mournful, rapping, “Free to mess with someone else, I wish these feelings could melt / ‘Cause you don’t care about a thing except your mothafuckin’ self.”

Cardi was recently featured on the Jennifer Lopez and DJ Khaled collaboration “Dinero,” as well as Rita Ora’s “Girls” with Bebe Rexha and Charli XCX.
