73 years ago today, on June 25, 1945, Carly Simon was born in New York City. One of the most iconic singer-songwriters of all time, Simon has countless hits to her name, but there’s one that’s remained her signature for decades: “You’re So Vain.”

Released in 1972, “You’re So Vain” was the original female-empowerment breakup anthem, long before Alanis Morissette channeled her anger via “You Oughta Know.” To this day, Simon’s hit resonates thanks to its playful, yet scorching burn: “You probably think this song is about you.”

In 2009, Simon performed “You’re So Vain” for Daytrotter, and slowed things down just enough to give the song a heavy, tenacious feel that’s vastly different from its original recording. And yet, the song still cuts like a knife. In honor of Simon’s birthday, listen to the track below.
