Catey Shaw: Live at Daytrotter, 2/8/16

Catey Shaw, a musician, singer and songwriter based in Brooklyn, New York but originally from Virginia Beach, has caught the interest of us here at Paste. Her energetic take on folk music also incorporates doo-wop and blue-eyed soul into her sound. This particular performance from the Daytrotter venue in Davenport, Iowa from February 8, 2016 is truly a barnburner (no pun intended).

This excellent set features many tunes written by Shaw, including her signature “Brooklyn Girls,” which went viral in 2014 and has over 300,000 hits on YouTube. In addition to these various songs that Shaw penned by herself, it also features a cover of Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home.” This is an emotive and stirring cover, and will please those who aren’t fans of the original, in addition to hardcore Drake aficionados.

The set closes with two funk/soul-based tunes “Tell Everyone” and “Human Contact.” Both are standouts of this set, and feature some great electric guitar work in addition to Shaw’s soul-stirring vocal prowess. If indie-pop singer/songwriters strike your fancy, Catey Shaw is a great musician to add to your playlist, and this set is a striking example of just what makes her so special. Make sure to pick up her newest release, the Ransom EP at a record dealer near you.
