Ceramic Animal make modern indie rock music and wrap it in an old-school package. From their look to certain aspects of their sound, they’re a prime example of the current revival-rock wave. That same wave has summoned bands like Tame Impala and Foxygen, both of which influence the sound of this group, or at least put it in some context. First off, this band is a lot of fun. Some in the world of music writing refuse to appreciate the raw energy and excitement of a band that is ‘fun’. With matching red suits and a sound that is equally tight-knit, Ceramic Animal’s performance is joyous and full of pomp as well as being silky and sly. The songs are structurally classic: the synth chords acting as backdrop and rhythm (I’m also feeling a little bit of that keys solo in “Time of the Season” by the Zombies) and the guitar tone is set to “George Harrison”—the contained retro aesthetic is shot for and hit with a bullseye. With one full length under their belt and another on the way, Ceramic Animal is just getting started, and I predict we’ll see this band evolving their sound over time.
