Japanese four-piece CHAI are back with a new self-titled album, out September 22nd via Sub Pop. Lead single “PARA PARA” pays homage to Japanese city pop, a cultural wave which swept the country in the 1980s. The aesthetics of the genre are bright, retro and synthy, much like CHAI itself promises to be. “PARA PARA” is a bright, eclectic celebration of J-Pop’s evolution. The name of the song refers to a synchronized dance craze which took over Japan’s Eurobeat nightlife in the ’90s, and its electro-funk beats are complete with joyous lyrics like “If my hair sticks up, that’s perfect” and “The disco ball is getting busy.”
