Charlotte Gainsbourg Explores Her Late Father’s Home in Haunting “Lying With You” Video
Image via Because MusicFor Rest, Charlotte Gainsbourg drew heavily on elements of both youth and adulthood to pen lyrics that have an overarching theme of the passage of time. She used the album to open up about her story, sharing personal and intimate details in both English and French, memorializing her father, French musician Serge Gainsbourg, in the process.
The video and lyrics for her newest single “Lying With You” focuses on her father in a more explicit way. Through breathy vocals and frenzied synth, she reimagines herself at 19, having just experienced her father’s death, and envisions finding and lying beside his body. “My mouth is whispering in raptures / Celebrating you,” she sings.
The video takes the remembrance of her father further: It was filmed in her father’s home, which was left nearly untouched since his death in 1991. Through a quivering lens, Gainsbourg and her childhood self revisit the corners of the home, exploring the heirlooms, old photographs and instruments that remain within its walls.
Rest was released Nov. 17 via Because Music/Atlantic Records. Revisit our review of the album here, and watch Gainsbourg’s self-directed video for “Lying With You” below.
