Charly Bliss Release New Single “Heaven”
The band are heading out on tour with Death Cab for Cutie
Photo by Amanda FotesCharly Bliss have released “Heaven,” a long-time staple of their live shows and the first song they’ve shared since 2017’s Guppy.
The song is a study in the crunch/clean dynamics that were all over the band’s debut record. Verses alternate between muted bass pounding and clean-picked arpeggios. It seems at times like the goal is to drench their guitars in as many different effects as possible, going from placid noise-scapes to guitar maelstroms in the span of seconds.
But according to singer Eva Hendricks, the song was more of an experiment in content than in form. “It’s our first love song, and I basically had to force myself to write the lyrics as a songwriting challenge to myself,” she said in a statement. “I think I was always worried that songwriting was something that only existed to me as a coping mechanism, and that once I was happy I wouldn’t have anything interesting to say or write about.”
And really, beneath all the guitar histrionics is a sweet, almost classic love song. How many times has a songwriter claimed to be “in heaven with you?” It’s a cliche, but Charly Bliss manage to make it sound fresh, even exciting.
Charly Bliss will be embarking on tour with Death Cab for Cutie this fall.
