Cher: The Musical Confirmed for Broadway in 2018
Photos by Ethan Miller/GettyNestled among Cher’s emoji-peppered tweets about Trump and cryptic personal messages on the star’s favorite social network is the announcement that a Cher musical is officially coming to Broadway in 2018.
The Goddess of Pop tweeted, “Just got off phone w/Writer & Director of musical. There will be a performance in theatre with actors, dancers, singers! It’ll be on Broadway 2018.”
Just got off phone w/Writer & Director of musical. There Will ???? performance in THEATRE WITH ACTORS,DANCERS,SINGERS??
IT’ll ????ON BROADWAY 2018— Cher (@cher) June 7, 2017
In addition to actors, dancers and singers, we’re expecting some of the brightest, most beaded costumes to grace the stage. And if they’re smart they’ll add a few nods to the current Cher, who has remained a modern icon via social media (see above tweet).
The show will be based on Cher’s life and career, following the pop star from her childhood in Los Angeles, throughout her career and marriage with Sonny Bono and beyond. Three different actresses will play Cher at various stages of her life; Jillian Mueller as the young Cher, Lena Hall as middle-aged Cher and Lesli Margherita as the mature one.
We can only imagine how spectacular the musical numbers will be, featuring tracks from Cher’s catalog like “I Got You Babe,” “If I Could Turn Back Time” and of course “Believe.”
Jason Moor (Avenue Q, Pitch Perfect) is set to direct and Rick Elice (Jersey Boy) is set to write the book. Jeffrey Seller (Hamilton) and Flody Suarez (Rise) will produce the show.
Cher already tweeted her approval after a read-through in January, when the musical was still tentative, and if that’s any indication, we’re in for quite a show.
