Chris Stapleton has recorded a rendition of “I Want Love” for a new Elton John and Bernie Taupin tribute album, Restoration. A pair of John and Taupin tribute albums was announced this week, and Restoration and Revamp will both be released on April 6. While Restoration features largely country musicians, Revamp features a wide range of pop, rock, R&B and rap artists.

In addition to Stapleton, the Restoration tracklist will also include contributions from Willie Nelson, Miley Cyrus, Dolly Parton, Miranda Lambert, Kacey Musgraves, Emmylou Harris, Dierks Bentley, Roseanne Cash, Little Big Town, Lee Ann Womack and more.

John’s Grammy-nominated “I Want Love” was originally released on his 2001 album Songs From The West Coast. It was accompanied by a music video starring Robert Downey Jr.

Stapleton’s version slows down the original, adding Stapleton’s soulful twang and dramatic strings, but keeping John’s beloved piano at the heart of the song. The result is a cathartic, moving ballad that pulls at the heart strings just as much as the enlivening strings of the violins.

In a statement, Stapleton says of his lifelong admiration for John’s music, “At any stage of life you can pick out a moment and a place in time, things that were going on and there’s an Elton John song playing somewhere in the background. He’s always going to be present in every musician’s mind and mine as well because his music reaches that far.”

The Revamp tracklist will include covers by Coldplay, The Killers, Lady Gaga, Ed Sheeran, Alessia Cara, Mary J. Blige, Florence and the Machine, Queens of The Stone Age, Sam Smith, Logic, Pink, Mumford and Sons, and more.

The first cut from Revamp was also released this week: A Tribe Called Quest’s Q Tip and Demi Lovato covered John’s “Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart.”

Earlier this year, John announced that he plans to retire from touring. However, he will embark on one final arena tour, “Farewell Yellow Brick Road.” John’s North American tour starts in September and you can watch his tour announcement video here.
