Listen to CHVRCHES’ Dynamic New Track, “Warning Call”

Music News CHVRCHES

Scottish synth-pop stars CHVRCHES have yet to put out any new material since their strong second album, last year’s Every Open Eye—or at least that was the case until yesterday.

“Warning Call,” the main theme for forthcoming first-person action game Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst, is classic CHVRCHES: relentless hooks, glowing synths and a general irresistibility that is undeniably sweet, but never saccharine. The song finds frontwoman Lauren Mayberry writing her lyrics from the perspective of Faith, the game’s heroine. “Say you’ll remember / To keep it all inside / You can run for the skyline / Your eyes open wide,” sings Mayberry, her voice mirroring the uplifting imagery. “It’s a memory,” she later intones over and over as the song finally collapses into a shimmering, irradiated heap.

The dynamism of the track seems a perfect fit with Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst itself. Per the “Warning Call” YouTube post, the game follows “Faith, a daring free runner, as she fights for freedom in the city of Glass.” Players can “explore every corner from the highest beautifully lit rooftops to the dark and gritty tunnels below,” and better still, they can jam out to CHVRCHES while they do it.
