Clipping’s new video for “Back Up,” a cut from the group’s 2016 EP Wriggle, is basically here to fuck up your day.
In the clip (pun semi-intended), a Blair Witch-type filmmaker takes the viewers through an abandoned warehouse where each room somehow tops the previous room in the grotesque game. There is face-swapping. Satanic rituals. Demon babies. And beer chugging that would frighten away even the bro-iest of bros.
Director Anna Zlokovic, who works in the horror and sci-fi genres, sums up the video thusly: “What begins as a curious exploration of an abandoned warehouse quickly devolves into the uncovering and filming of an underground, cult-like society—one where adults have baby faces and milk is the drug of choice.” Even on paper that sounds horrifying, though the last point would probably make Alex Delarge and his droogs happy.
As for the warehouse in question, famed Los Angeles venue The Smell served as the locale. The community arts and music space is set to be demolished, though artists such as Best Coast and No Age have been performing benefit gigs and supporting petitions to keep it open. Clipping have performed at The Smell in the past and believe that the choice to film there is “in service of the current #SaveTheSmell campaign.”
