Collective Soul rocketed out of Atlanta in 1993 almost by accident. After studying at the Berklee School of Music in Boston and returning home, guitarist Ed Roland bounced around local bands, recording demos here and there and working as a mixer and engineer in an Atlanta studio. When he gathered a crew of musicians to help him record a new demo of a song he’d written, they convened in a basement and made “Shine,” which found its way to Georgia’s biggest college-radio station. The rest, as they say, is “Whhhooooaaaaa.” “Shine” went on to become one of the most recognized radio rock songs of the 1990s and propelled the band, called Collective Soul, to a string of hits (seven No. 1s in all) and a recording career that endures to this day.

Now, on the eve of the 25th anniversary of that fateful basement session, Collective Soul are releasing their first ever live album, intuitively titled Collective Soul: Live, on Dec. 8. The band—Roland, guitarist Dean Roland, bassist Will Turpin, guitarist Jesse Triplett, and drummer Johnny Rabb—recorded more than 160 shows over the course of the two years, then cherry-picked the best performances to assemble the live album. Fittingly, they introduce the collection with a live version of “Shine.”
