Daily Dose: Cosmic Strip, “Sugar Rush”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

London shoegazers Cosmic Strip just dropped their debut EP on Friday, Heavenly, and the band are currently on their first U.K. tour.

Taken from their brand new five-track EP is the new single, “Sugar Rush,” which molds the psychedelic, fleeting dream pop of Beach House with the washed-out beauty of Slowdive. Frontwoman Camella Agabalyan’s unearthly, misty lead vocals along with echoing backing vocals even recall the absolute staple of the shoegaze canon, My Bloody Valentine’s 1991 classic, Loveless. The song’s whispered vocals and hazy sonic quality perfectly counter the overblown distortion of the guitars and the lyrical theme of intense obsession.

“I wanted to write a song about the feeling of addiction whether it’s sugar, love, a drug, whatever your vice is,” says Agabalyan. “I personally really connect to dreamy, druggy songs like Air, My Bloody Valentine, Beach Fossils, Slowdive, The Jesus & The Mary Chain, etc. so I wanted to inspire myself from that feeling but also show the darker side of addiction that you might not always get from those types of songs.”
