Courtney Marie Andrews Partners With Fat Possum and Mama Bird Recording Co., Shares Video for Previously Unreleased “Heart and Mind”

Seattle singer-songwriter Courtney Marie Andrews broke through in a big way with her 2016 release Honest Life. The record cracked Paste’s list of the year’s best albums, introducing legions of new listeners to Andrews’ sublime vocals and songcraft. And her star only continues to rise, as Andrews announced today that she has signed to Fat Possum Records—the Oxford, Miss., label will partner with Mama Bird Recording Co., as well as with Andrews’ European label, Loose Music, to support her work.

“I’m elated that Fat Possum will be co-releasing my albums with Mama Bird Recording Co.,” said Andrews of the partnership. “So honored to be a part of a label with such an incredible catalog, that includes artists like Townes Van Zandt, Al Green and Fred McDowell, yet continues to support new songwriters and artists. Fat Possum has a unique and rich history with music, and I’m grateful they’ll be taking me on.”

As part of her announcement, Andrews has also released a video for her previously unreleased track “Heart and Mind.” Andrews explained the empowering tune’s genesis in a statement:

Back in November, only two days or so after the election, this song hit me like a brick at a Love’s Truck Stop. I pulled over, and wrote it in 10 minutes. That’s how some songs are delivered, fully formed, and you must write them when they come. For the first time in my womanhood, I felt powerless, because the man who was supposed to rule our country made some very shocking and hurtful comments about women. It reminded me of all the times I, or someone close to me, had been harassed, sexually abused, cat-called, or body shamed. The song is intended to empower, and to conquer our demons. It is a statement, not a plea or a question. We ARE more than bodies. We are strong, intelligent, capable humans, with our own opinions and thoughts. It’s a song that I desperately needed as a reminder, and a song that I hope serves as a reminder to women who feel powerless.

Andrews heads out on tour with Joe Pug in Australia this summer, then headlines a fall European tour of her own before joining Hamilton Leithauser for a string of shows in October.
