DARKSIDE Announce New Album Nothing and First North American Tour in 11 Years
The trio’s third album will arrive on February 28 via Matador Records. Listen to the magnetic new single “S.N.C” below.
Nicolás Jaar and Dave Harrington’s collaborative project DARKSIDE returns on February 28 with a new record, Nothing. That collaborative spirit has both changed and expanded, however, as Nothing marks the group’s first studio record as a trio, now including drummer Tlacael Esparza, and the three set off on a promising North American tour in March—DARKSIDE’s first in over 11 years.
Bringing on longtime friend and collaborator, Tlacael Esparza, as a full-time member represents a fundamental shift from the band’s entire existence until now, reforming their sound and spirit and allowing the new trio to build itself from scratch. Nothing is simultaneously a rebirth for DARKSIDE and a heightening of past work, building upon 2021’s Spiral while creating new songs “out of spontaneous elliptical jams, acoustic riffing and digital levitations,” as per a press release.
The announcement is accompanied by a new single, “S.N.C,” short for “still no center.” The track is a near six-minute jam that flows between layers of eerie atmospheres, reversed vocals and bouts of funk keyboard with tight percussion and dance style vocal cuts. The song’s subtly detailed arrangement evokes an overwhelming and hypnotic feeling, like I’m trapped floating between three songs at once. This new and—dare I say—improved DARKSIDE expertly emphasizes mood without sacrificing melody, leaving me excited for what’s to come on Nothing.
