PREMIERE: Daughter of Swords Releases “Alone Together”

Today, Daughter of Swords—the project North Carolina singer-songwriter and Mountain Men and the A’s member Alex Sauser-Monnig—has unveiled their new single, “Alone Together,” out via Psychic Hotline The song’s release marks Sauser-Monnig’s first solo song since 2020’s “Prairie Winter Wasteland,” which came out a year after their debut LP, Dawnbreaker. In the five years since that record, Sauser-Monnig has written Daughter of Swords into a transitional vessel interwoven with synthesizers, buoyant percussion and Sauser-Monnig’s vocals, which curl into a yelp but, ultimately, simmer in a crushing hum. On “Alone Together,” the guitars are bright and the songwriting is ace, as a Sauser-Monnig revels in their current, mid-heartaching truth: “I don’t really want to see anybody, except my friends and my dog and my paycheck money.” The label “singer-songwriter” just doesn’t do Daughter of Swords justice. “Alone Together” is rock-tinged pop confetti entangled in a broken relationship and a “belief in love” that’s “worn pretty thin.”

“‘Alone Together’ is a song about reckoning with the need to connect when the rest of your life is locked in and satisfying,” Sauser-Monnig says. “The cracking of the veneer of self sufficiency. Its content was mirrored in its recording, in the way recording a song demands vulnerability and community to bring it into fullness and reality.”
