Bowie’s The Man Who Fell to Earth Soundtrack to Finally Be Released
Photo by Express/GettyNicolas Roeg and David Bowie’s science-fiction cult classic The Man Who Fell to Earth, which stars Bowie as an alien, debuted in 1976. Now, 40 years later, the soundtrack will be made commercially available for the very first time when the film returns to England theaters in September.
Bowie was originally supposed to handle the score, but Roeg decided to enlist John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas, with contributions from Japanese composer Stomu Yamash’ta and former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor. However, several songs that Bowie wrote for The Man Who Fell to Earth ended up on his 1977 album Low.
The 2xCD is able to be released on Sept. 9 due to the recent discovery of lost master tapes, according to NME. A 2xLP deluxe box set that includes a 48-page hardcover book explaining why the soundtrack was never released, in addition to film set photos and notes from the film’s editor Graeme Clifford, will be released on Nov. 18.
