Deerhunter have shared another new song ahead of the impending release of their eighth studio album, Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?, due out on Jan. 18. The LP, described in a press release as “a science fiction album about the present,” will be the Atlanta-based quintet’s first since 2015’s Fading Frontier.
“Plains” is the third advance track off Deerhunter’s new album, following previous singles “Death in Midsummer” and “Element.” The song was “inspired by James Dean who spent the last summer of his life filming Giant in Marfa, Texas, in 1955,” per the band’s announcement.
Bradford Cox, Lockett Pundt, Moses Archuleta, Josh McKay and Javier Morales are joined on “Plains” by Ben H. Allen III, who plays a “synthetic bass system” on the song. “I was racing against time with this friend of mine,” sings Cox. “Collapsing just before we reach the end of the line.”
