Dan Bejar’s beloved project, Destroyer, is making its return on March 28 with a new record, Dan’s Boogie. It’s Bejar’s first album since LABYRINTHITIS, which we named the 34th-best record of 2022 and crowned its lead single “June” as the 10th-best song of that year. Dan’s Boogie continues his partnership with Merge Records, and the LP is being called a “breakthrough album” for Bejar that will feature “songs across the vast spectrum he and his collaborators have established for themselves: spectacle-laden pop epics, personal piano ballads, and smoldering works of mood that blur the lines between song and novel and cinema, each brimming with the urgency of a state secret in the mind of a tortured spy.”
The announcement is accompanied by a new song, “Bologna,” which features guest vocals from Fiver’s Simone Schmidt. “I haven’t written many songs like ‘Bologna,’” Bejar said in a press statement. “I struggled singing the first and third verses, the most important parts of the song. They needed gravity and grit. The threat of disappearing needed to be real. So I called Simone.” “Bologna” is textbook Destroyer, full of odd syllables, twinkling keyboards, stray guitars and a melt of different-pitched voices tangling within each other. Suffice to say: It’s a splendid introduction to Bejar’s next chapter.
